Factors influencing the safety of outpatient coronary CT angiography: a clinical registry study

Abstract: ObjectivesSince the safety of coronary CT angiography (CTA) is of great importance, especially with regard to widening indications and increasing morbidity, the aim of this study was to assess influencing factors.MethodsPatients undergoing coronary CTA in a third-generation dual-source CT in a radiological centre were included in a clinical registry. Up to 20 mg metoprolol was administered intravenously to attain a heart rate ≤65/min. Glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) was administered in doses of 0.8 mg and 0.4 mg. Bl… Show more

“…The widespread introduction of these functional assessments into the CCTA protocol aims to transform it into a unique stop in the patient investigation pathway that simultaneously establishes anatomical and functional information [ 3 ]. One of the most recent concepts in CCTA postprocessing is the assessment of peri coronary fat to evaluate the pathophysiological processes and inflammation at the coronary level that could cause myocardial infarction [ 3 , 18 ].…”

“…Adverse events associated with CTA include anaphylactic reactions, vasovagal symptoms, nausea, or disturbances in systemic blood pressure. Additionally, the impact on thyroid function and the potential risk of contrast-induced kidney disease must be considered [128]. Another aspect to consider is the exposure to radiation during the imaging procedure, which may slightly increase the risk of developing cancer [129].…”

“…Coronary CTA offers excellent periprocedural safety and risk stratification equivalent to invasive coronary angiography [5,6]. As coronary CTA allows for the detection of early and nonobstructive stages of coronary artery disease (CAD) and for the identification of high-risk plaques, it enables the timely initiation of adequate preventive therapies [7,8].…”
