Factors of rabies maintenance in dog population in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

Abstract: Purpose: Rabies kills every year 61 000 humans in the world, mainly in Asia and Africa. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), rabies is endemic and the dog is the main vector of human rabies. From 1937 to 2017, around 1400 positive dog rabies cases were recorded across the country. “…In the DRC, dog vaccination is not governmentally subsidized. The Congolese National Order of Veterinarians (ONMVC: Ordre National des Médecins Vétérinaires du Congo) fixed the price for dog rabies vaccination at no less than 20 USD [29], although it has been shown earlier in a similar setting that cost above 2 USD cannot be borne by the community [30].
