Purpose: The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic caused a sudden shift to online teaching and learning which resulted in confusion for higher education institutions not only in Saudi Arabia, but worldwide as well. Due to the broad availability of technology infrastructure in Saudi higher education institutions, Blackboard Collaborate is widely used in most Saudi universities. As positive perspectives were found to play an important impact in the adoption of new technology in earlier research, this paper aims to investigate Qassim University EFL Intensive Course Program (ICP) instructors' perspectives towards utilizing the Blackboard Collaborate as an emergency remote teaching tool during COVID-19 pandemic.Design/methodology/approach: To collect data from the participants, the study employed a qualitative research method, namely, semi-structured interviews with 15 ICP EFL instructors. The interviews were face to face and included predetermined questions that focused on the pros and cons of utilizing Blackboard Collaborate as a remote teaching tool during Covid-19 pandemic. Findings:The study revealed the pros and cons of using the Blackboard Collaborate as a remote teaching tool during COVID-19 pandemic as perceived by ICP EFL instructors. While the pros included novel teaching methods in Blackboard Collaborate, offering interactive lessons via using Blackboard Collaborate, and a great deal of motivation resulted from using Blackboard Collaborate, the cons comprised ICP EFL instructors' lack of competency in using Blackboard Collaborate, students' lack of competency in using Blackboard Collaborate, and technical problems.Originality/value: Most literature published on using Blackboard Collaborate in the Saudi higher education context focused on using it in teaching EFL advanced learners with prior experience with Blackboard Collaborate. To my knowledge, this is the first paper to investigate the participants' perspectives towards using the Blackboard Collaborate in teaching secondary school leavers without prior experience with Blackboard Collaborate like ICP EFL students.

The present study aims to examine students’ perceptions on using the Blackboard learning system during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study investigates the effectiveness of the Blackboard on the students’ learning during Coronavirus lockdown. It aims at finding out the difficulties and the challenges students face while using the Blackboard platform as a learning tool. It is expected that this study will contribute to the growing literature on the use of the Blackboard, mainly on its purposes to replace face-to-face learning/teaching process. Therefore, this study provides information about the learning experiences of Saudi students while the highly active use of the Blackboard and presents the challenges faced by the students during the online learning/teaching process. The study employs the quantitative research method as a questionnaire is used for collecting data. It is designed in Google format and emailed to the students. A sample of 270 respondents was selected from the Community College Abqaiq, King Faisal University. The method of analysis is descriptive statistical analysis, where the SPSS is employed for data analysis. The result reveals that students’ perceptions are positive because students are aware of the benefit of the Blackboard platform during the COVID-19 pandemic. And when comparing choice preference between blended courses and online courses, students prefer blended courses. This is due to the challenges and difficulties that students face while using the Blackboard platform.

For example , Wood, et al (2004) examined the responses of 862 faculty members using Blackboard at 38 institutions in the USA and found that few faculty used Blackboard for instructional or assessment purposes, and even fewer utilized Blackboard to foster a more positive sense of community within their face-to-face classes.…”

This research was conducted to investigate the use of Blackboard by faculty members in the Colleges of Applied Sciences in the Sultanate of Oman and the factors affecting their use. A questionnaire was completed online by 257faculty members representing 43.05% of the total faculty population in these colleges. Results showed that Blackboard is still underutilized by faculty; it is mainly used as a depositary tool rather than for instructional and assessment purposes. Results also revealed that there are statistically significant differences in Blackboard use related to age, experience, specialization and college. However, other demographic variables (i.e. gender and academic rank) had no effect on Blackboard usage. Technology infrastructure and faculty support were identified as being the major factors leading to limited use of Blackboard in these colleges. It is recommended that immediate action be taken to address these issues; it is further recommended that additional research be undertaken to investigate student and faculty characteristics that relate to Blackboard usage.
