Superficial defects are the prominent drawbacks of the most usual real‐world surfaces. The response of the coatings to the external deforming scratches is an issue of an importance when industrial applications are concerned. It is very well known that, the network of silica not only in the aerogels but also in coatings is weaker. In this study, the role of polymethylmethacrylate blended with the silica particles is studies. Also, the sol–gel parameters to obtain hydrophobic and scratch resistance silica coatings on glass are modified. The mechanical strength of the coating from 6 B to B is enhanced. The hydrophobicity of coatings is quantified by water drop contact angle. The measured contact angle values are 149° and sliding angle 4°. Scanning electron microscopy reveals dual assembly of micro and nanoparticles of the order of 100–500 nm. These coatings are examined through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, surface roughness, etc.
