Factors Underpinning Caregiver Burden in Frontotemporal Dementia Differ in Spouses and their Children

Abstract: The objectives of this observational study were to (1) compare spousal and child caregiver burden; (2) compare co-resident and live-out child caregiver burden; and (3) investigate factors influencing spousal and child caregiver burden. Data was collected from 90 caregivers of people with frontotemporal degeneration (FTD) recruited from the Frontotemporal Dementia Research Group (Frontier) at Neuroscience Research, Australia. Of this caregiver group, 43 were spousal caregivers and 47 were child caregivers. Care… Show more

“…Being a caregiver for a relative with dementia is a risk factor for psychological stress and physical ill‐health (Gilhooly et al., ). Family caregivers who care for people with dementia experience emotional problems that include depression, anxiety, stress (Givens, Mezzacappa, Heeren, Yaffe, & Fredman, ; Kaizik et al., ) and chronic fatigue (Osaki et al., ). Recognizing these negative impacts of caregiver stress, the Global Dementia Observatory, developed by the World Health Organization in 2017, includes support for dementia caregivers; similarly, the Third Comprehensive Dementia Management Plan (2016–2020), designed by Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare, includes major strategies to reduce the stress experienced by these family caregivers.…”

“…Caregiver burden is multifactorial, and we did not control for the full range of potential confounding variables. In particular, we did not have measures of caregiver depression, which has been shown to be a strong influencer of burden, particularly in adult children caregivers [ 54 ]. Other factors such as hours providing care and level of support provided by health services can also affect burden, but were not measured in this study.…”
