FACTS for cost-effective improvement of power feeding of large mining complexes

Abstract: Loads such as mine hoists, mmmg shovels, crushers, etc for mining are demanding and also sensitive to dips and fluctuations in feeding voltage, thereby depending on secure, high quality power supply. At the same time, mining complexes are often remotely located, where power is weak and unpredictable. A traditional way to deal with poor power supply is reinforcing the grid by building new lines, uprating voltages to higher levels, or building local power plants to supply parts or the total of the load. Such mea… Show more

“…Te reactive power efect on frequency and the active power efect on system voltage are examined in reference [20], when a STATCOM is simulated in an IHPS. Mining power installations that utilize the FACTS have been documented in references [21,22] where an application study of an SVC for improving the power factor and THD in mining complexes is conducted. STATCOM applications in mining are reviewed in references [23,24], compensating quality problems (voltage sags, THD) in an underground mine, and in reference [25] where it is installed to support voltage during starting of an asynchronous machine in low voltage.…”

“…For the coal mine with high gas leakage risk and the deep mines that only have vertical exits, the extremely serious safety accident will happen if the ventilation or lifting device cannot work because of the power failure [1]. Since that, adding the independent emergency power supply becomes the inevitable choice to enhance the reliability of coal mine distribution network and ensure production safety.…”
