Faculty Perspectives of Academic Integrity During COVID-19: A Mixed Methods Study of Four Canadian Universities

Abstract: Faculty members are crucial partners in promoting academic integrity at Canadian universities, but their needs related to academic integrity are neither well documented nor understood. To address this gap, we developed a mixed methods survey to gather faculty perceptions of facilitators and barriers to using the existing academic integrity procedures, policies, resources, and supports required to promote academic integrity. “…During the pandemic, instructors often used online proctoring services, whereby a student is monitored by a web camera while taking an exam or test. In many instances, online proctoring was inordinately intrusive of a student's privacy and was often not successful in preventing students from “cheating.” Eaton and Turner (2020) conducted a rapid review method of finding the effects of e‐proctoring examinations on student mental health by collecting and analyzing sources of existing evidence. The researchers found that most published articles suggest that the use of remotely proctored exams is associated with student stress and anxiety, but further research is needed.…”

Scientific articles are still being published [2][3][4] that share data collected in those moments of uncertainty, and which are of great value for developing strategies with which to respond to the new changes in education and new learning ecosystems, either fully online or hybrid, that many universities are encouraged to implement.…”
