Camera components made of stainless steel (SS304) and Ti-6Al-4V alloy are used as anti-vibrator stoppers (pin-pull) for the focusing imaging system embedded in satellites that are remotely operated. Vibration tests for the certification China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite 3 (CBERS-3) generated galling problems in some parts of these components. Nitrogen plasma immersion ion implantation (N-PIII) was an useful technique to enhance the surface properties of these components and consequently to overcome such problems. This work shows the characterization of implanted SS304 samples to explain the surface modifications that allow the improving of the mentioned components. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the samples indicated that N-PIII at 12 kV form expanded austenite phase with 0.7 micrometers of thickness and atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed a typical nodular morphology at the surface. Hardness measurements revealed a significant increase in the surface hardness after N-PIII treatment. Wear tests using a pin-on-disc device showed an increase in wear resistance and a reduction in the friction coefficient. Such observed surface modifications successfully prevented galling in the pin-pull camera parts through the reduction of the adhesive mechanisms.

Ferrous alloys, particularly steels, form a specialized class of metallic materials extensively employed in industrial sectors to combat deterioration and failures caused by wear. Despite their commendable mechanical properties, steels are not immune to wear-induced degradation. In this context, surface nanocrystallization (SNC) technologies have carved a distinct niche for themselves by enabling the nanostructuring of the surface layer (with grain sizes < 100 nm). This process enhances overall mechanical properties to a level desirable for wear resistance while preserving the chemical composition. Existing literature has consistently highlighted the efficacy of various SNC methods in improving the wear resistance of ferrous alloys, positioning SNC as a promising tool to extend materials’ service life in practical applications. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the SNC techniques employed in surface treatment of ferrous alloys and their impact on wear behavior. We delved into the underlying mechanisms governing wear in SNC-treated Fe-based alloys and concluded with a discussion on current challenges and future perspectives in this evolving field.

Abstract.During maintenance operations, technicians have to work as quickly as possible. But they are often stopped during disassembly by blocked bolts or studs. This paper examines causes of blockage and suggests new method for disassembling bolted joint in this case. Several methods are analyzed and tested with finite element simulations. An experimental protocol to test a new disassembling method is also introduced in this paper.
