Failure Modes and Effects Analysis: An Evaluation of Group versus Individual Performance

Abstract: Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) is one of the most frequently used tools in process and product design: it is used in quality and reliability planning, and event and failure mode analysis. It has a long history of use and is a formally prescribed procedure by a number of prominent standards organizations. In addition, it's popular use has evolved as a less formal and widely interpreted tool in the area of Lean/Six Sigma (LSS) process improvement. This paper investigates one of the most important issu… Show more

“…Other researchers have looked at tools that are used to integrate projects, whether within the context of an information system or not. Most of this work has focused on specific tools such as design structure matrices (Browning 2001), quality function deployment (Griffin and Hauser 1992), or failure mode and effect analysis (Guerrero and Bradley 2013). Finally, a group of researchers have looked specifically at how different forms of communication, such as face-to-face, telephone, e-mail, or videoconferencing, have a differential impact upon the integration of DKWs (McDonough et al 1999, Sosa et al 2002.…”

“…The experimental design was structured to investigate our hypotheses in Section “.” The responses of groups rather than individuals were considered because Guerrero and Bradley (2011) have shown that group FMEA rankings using RPN more closely replicate experts’ rankings than do individuals’ FMEA rankings. The groups were composed of MBA students who were studying FMEA in a core operations course.…”
