Fairness and Justice in Natural Resource Politics

Abstract: As demand for natural resources increases due to the rise in world population and living standards, conflicts over their access and control are becoming more prevalent. This book critically assesses different approaches to and conceptualizations of resource fairness and justice and applies them to the analysis of resource conflicts.Approaches addressed include cosmopolitan liberalism, political economy and political ecology. These are applied at various scales (local, national, international) and to initiative… Show more

“…Ulrich Brand, Christoph Gorg, and others have used the strategic-relational approach to explore barriers to transitioning to sustainable economies (Görg et al, 2017) as well as to examine environmental governance at national and international spatial scales (Brand and Görg, 2008; Brand et al, 2008, 2011). Plank (2017) uses it to inform a study of the agrofuel industry in the Ukraine, while Pichler engages it to examine sustainability certification processes for palm oil producers in South East Asia (Pichler, 2013) and movements for socio-ecological justice (Pichler, 2017).…”

“…Neither the long-term feasibility-and thus biophysical constraints-nor questions of justice and (global) inequalities can be ignored for any transformation towards sustainability that take this term seriously. As conflicts over access and control of natural resources are becoming more prevalent in the future, resource fairness and justice becomes a major topic of SETs, both between and within countries [70]. Several concepts exist to analyse such large scale and long term perspectives, e.g., unequal ecological exchange between countries [69], and the unequal carbon footprint of households within China [71].…”

“…Linked to the access to and control over resources and the role of extractive sectors in (transnational) production and consumption networks are questions of inequality and justice [77]. This strand of research has centered on who stands to benefit economically and socially from resource extraction and who carries the socio-ecological costs, including, for example, pollution, loss of land, or health impacts [78].…”
