False-Positive Whole-Body Scan After I-131 Therapy in a Patient With Intestinal Scar

Abstract: The I-131 whole-body scan is a useful test to investigate the presence of metastatic disease of thyroid cancer after thyroidectomy. A 53-year-old woman received I-131 4 months after total thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid carcinoma for postsurgical ablation of the residual tumor cells. Whole-body scan demonstrated focal uptake of I-131 in the right iliac fossa that persisted 2 days later even after administration of laxatives. Computed tomography of this area showed only focal bowel scar presumably resulting… Show more

“…However, the retention of radioiodine in right lower abdominal region was not in the kidney localization in our cases. Sioka et al 41 reported that intense focal uptake of " 131 I" in the right iliac fossa due to bowel scar presumably resulting from a complicated appendectomy 31 years ago. Colon metastases of thyroid cancer are not expected.…”

“…These results of outcome in psychological and physical QoL were in accordance with our previous findings, on the prevalence of depression/anxiety in patients undertaking myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) with 99mTc-tetrofosmin stress-rest single-photon emission computed tomography 2 . All patients selected for our study had no known previous psychological disease, any use of illicit drugs or diseases that could influence psychological status such as cancer 3 , 4 . The study included 35 patients with previous PTCA and CABG (mean age: 66.7 yr), 20 of whom had in addition previous myocardial infarction.…”
