Familial Cutaneous Collagenoma

Abstract: A 41-year-old woman presented to our dermatology clinic in February 2005 with a chief complaint of numerous flesh-colored nodules on her back and abdomen. She initially noticed the lesions at age 17 years. The plaques had increased in size and number over time, but remained asymptomatic. The patient reported multiple similar lesions on a maternal uncle and a cousin. Her family history was also notable for cardiomyopathy, resulting in the death of her mother. “…The first description of eruptive collagenomas is often attributed to Coulomb in 1955, but Amaya mentions probable cases in the Japanese literature dating back to 1928. Henderson et al described the first case of familial collagenoma in 1968, and since then several other affected families have been documented . Lesions of EC tend to appear rather suddenly, in days to weeks, but additional lesions can arise for several months after the initial crop.…”

“…There are two previous reports of treatment of collagenoma with intralesional injections. Dawn et al (9) reported a case of a 41-year-old female with familial cutaneous collagenomas, wherein some lesions that caused irritation to the patient were excised without any recurrence. In the same patient, intralesional triamcinolone acetonide was injected in few lesions, which resulted in reduction in their size.…”
