Family Care-Work Interference and Mid/Late-Career Motivation and Intentions: Mediating Role of Occupational Future Time Perspective

Abstract: The combination of work and family obligations can lead to two-way interference, resulting in Family Care Interference with Work (FCIW) and Work Interference with Family Care (WIFC). Both can impact late career motivation and intentions to continue working or retire and reduce their occupational time perspective (OFTP). Through two studies, this paper shows how OFTP mediates the relationship between FCIW/WIFC and mid and late career indicators such as early retirement intentions and motivation to continue work… Show more

“…We find that F-WE is positively correlated with work-related variables, which can also be explained by cross-domain effects ( Zhang et al, 2018 ). The mediating role of OFTP in family relationship and work-result relationship further enriches the relationship between F-WE and work-related variables ( Alcover et al, 2022 ). In addition, OFTP (perceived remaining time, focus on opportunities, focus on limitations) with three dimensions is becoming more and more effective and common ( Zacher, 2013 ; Topa and Zacher, 2018 ; Alcover et al, 2022 ).…”

“…Conversely, older individuals may experience income uctuations due to factors like career plateaus or caregiving responsibilities. Some prioritize stability over pursuing higher earnings, contributing to observed income differences among age groups (Alcover et al 2023). Age is thus seen as a vulnerability factor in the condition of poverty.…”

“… 7 They face a more complex family environment and are known as “sandwiched” work caregivers. 8 Multiple family roles cost older employees a lot of time and energy, so that his normal performance of his job responsibilities will also be affected, increasing the rate of absenteeism and early retirement intention, 9 and even forcing older employees to make career-damaging decisions. 10 Therefore, family-work conflict (FWC) can better reflect the realistic dilemma of SAW in the Chinese context.…”
