Family communication patterns and relationship quality between emerging adults and their parents

Abstract: Few researchers have examined how family communication patterns influence child help-seeking behaviors and child help-providing behaviors in relation to the parent-child relationship during the period of emerging adulthood. In the current study we utilized a latent profile analysis to determine family communication pattern types from two standard communication orientations (i.e., conversation orientation and conformity orientation). We also examined how pattern types were associated with parent-emerging adult … Show more

“…The questionnaire has consistently demonstrated good psychometric properties in an array of studies done with emerging adults (e.g., Szkody and McKinney2021) and in the Chinese cultural context (e.g., Chen, 2014). For example, Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.78 to 0.90 on the subscales in the study on emerging adults' perceived parenting by Szkody & McKinney (2021). Cronbach's alpha was .86 for both the authoritative subscale and the authoritarian subscale in the present study.…”

“…The PAQ was initially designed for older adolescent and young adult children to offer a retrospective evaluation of their perceived parenting during their upbringing. It has been shown to allow both separate and joint evaluations of parenting styles employed by fathers and mothers (e.g., Chen, 2014; Szkody & McKinney (2021)). Participants responded using a 5-point Likert scale, ranging from 1 ( strongly disagree ) to 5 ( strongly agree ).…”

“…It is important to note that emerging adults report experiencing a wide range of discipline during emerging adulthood. Research suggests that emerging adults often remain under the influence of their parents while simultaneously experiencing a shift in their relationship dynamics with their parents (Szkody & McKinney, 2021). Despite the mounting evidence that parents continue to discipline their children during emerging adulthood (e.g., Malkin & McKinney, 2019; Van den Hurk & McKinney, 2021), less is known about how parents do so.…”

“…Each member is encouraged to think independent., There is openness that will help them solve problems and build positive relationships. Families continue to support each other and try to resolve conflicts in a positive way (Keating et al, 2013;Ramadhana et al, 2019;Szkody & Mckinney, 2021). Instead of using protective communication patterns emphasize conformity and obedience, where one family member who is considered dominant will make a decision or problem solving that feels good, and other family members must follow.…”
