This manuscript explores the relationship between the economic awareness (as a part of energy awareness) of Polish households and their sustainable energy consumption practices. Sustainable consumption is measured by the frequency of behaviors such as turning off electrical devices when not in use, removing mobile device chargers from sockets, switching off lights when leaving a room, preferring showers over baths, using washing machines and dishwashers only when full, and purchasing energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs. Economic awareness is gauged through variables such as knowledge of electricity tariffs, understanding of electric bill components, awareness of electricity prices, exact knowledge of electricity expenses, electricity usage in kWh, knowledge of effective energy-saving methods, and familiarity with the energy efficiency classes of appliances and light bulbs. This study presents profiles of households with high and low economic awareness regarding their electricity expenditures and examines how these profiles differ in their sustainable energy consumption behaviors. This research is based on a survey of 1407 Polish households conducted online in 2023. Data collected from the survey were subjected to statistical analysis and are presented in tables and graphs. The findings are discussed in the context of the existing literature in the field, highlighting the implications of economic awareness on sustainable energy consumption practices. This research contributes to understanding how economic knowledge influences energy-saving behaviors among Polish households, providing insights for policymakers and energy conservation initiatives. One of the key findings of this paper is the significant association between economic awareness, energy-saving knowledge, and the adoption of sustainable energy consumption behaviors among Polish households. This study reveals that households with higher levels of economic awareness demonstrate a notably higher frequency of practices related to sustainable energy consumption compared to those with lower economic awareness. Similarly, households equipped with greater knowledge about energy-saving techniques exhibit a higher propensity to adopt energy-efficient behaviors. This underscores important roles of economic literacy and education in fostering behavioral changes towards more sustainable energy practices, highlighting the importance of targeted interventions and educational campaigns aimed at enhancing economic awareness and promoting energy-saving knowledge among consumers.

The use of greywater heat exchangers (GHEs) is an effective way to reduce energy consumption for heating domestic water. However, the available characteristics of this type of device are often insufficient and consider only a few selected parameters of water and greywater, which results in the need to look for tools enabling the determination of the effectiveness of GHEs in various operating conditions with incomplete input data. The aim of this paper was to determine the usefulness of artificial neural networks (ANNs). For this purpose, comprehensive experimental tests were carried out on the effectiveness of the horizontal heat exchanger, taking into account a wide range of water and greywater flow rates and temperatures of these media, as well as the linear bottom slope of the unit, which allowed for the creation of a database of 32,175 results. Then, the feasibility of implementing the full research plan was assessed using ANNs. The analysis showed that the impact of the media temperatures on the heat exchanger effectiveness values obtained using ANNs is limited, which makes it possible to significantly reduce the number of necessary experiments. Adopting only three temperature values of at least one medium allowed the generation of ANN models with coefficient values R2 = 0.748–0.999 and RMSE = 0.077–1.872. In the case of the tested GHE, the slope and the flow rate of the mixed water are of key importance. However, even in the case of parameters of significant importance, it is possible to reduce the research plan without compromising the final results. Assuming five different values for each of the four input parameters (a total of 625 combinations) made it possible to generate an ANN model (R2 = 0.993 and RMSE = 0.311) with high generalization ability on the full research plan covering 32,175 cases. Therefore, the conducted analysis confirmed the usefulness of ANNs in assessing the effectiveness of GHEs in various operating conditions. The approach described in this paper is important for both environmental and economic reasons, as it allows for reducing the consumption of water and energy, which are necessary to carry out such scientific research.

The application of infiltration basins and tanks is one of the primary means of sustainable stormwater management. However, the methods currently used to size these facilities do not take into account a number of parameters that have a significant impact on their required capacity. In light of this, the aim of this research was to develop a new method for selecting the geometry of the infiltration basins and tanks. Its application in the initial phase of designing stormwater management systems will allow assessing the validity of using such facilities in a given catchment area. This paper also presents the results of local and global sensitivity analyses examining how changes in individual design parameters influence stormwater infiltration facilities. The effectiveness of the developed model was evaluated through the example of a real urban catchment. The study was based on a hydrodynamic analysis of more than 3000 model catchments. The research plan was developed using Statistica software. On the other hand, the analysis of the results of hydrodynamic simulations was made possible through the use of artificial neural networks designed using the Python programming language. The research also confirmed that parameters such as the total catchment area, the percent of impervious area, and the type of soil within the catchment are crucial in the design process of these facilities. The results of this research can be considered when designing infiltration basins and tanks under Polish conditions. The described algorithm can also be used by other researchers to develop similar models based on different rainfall data. This will contribute to increasing the safety of urban infrastructure.
