Abstract: Background Improving outcomes after surgery in Africa is a priority. The SMARTER Pilot Trial was a step-wedge cluster-randomised trial of family member supplemented vital signs monitoring after surgery. A concurrent process evaluation provides contextual understanding of intervention delivery.
