“…Excluding 895 nonpertinent studies, we retrieved in complete form and assessed according to the selection criteria 21 studies . Eight studies were excluded because randomization was not applied: one study compared TLT and GWDF, one RDT and MDT, one TLT and MDT, two compared TLT and SSDT, and three compared GWDF and SSDT: all studies concluded that the compared techniques showed no statistical differences in complication rates. We finally identified 13 eligible randomized clinical trials, which were included in the final analysis (Fig.…”

“…Furthermore, none of the 13 randomized studies reported economic analysis and it was not possible to assess this important point. Thus, we should rely on limited data from nonrandomized studies, suggesting that SSDT is cheaper than TLT, and TLT has a cost‐benefit advantage over the MDT. However, PDT techniques resulted much cheaper than surgical tracheostomy.…”

“…Several mini-invasive procedures has been proposed, allowing the management of serious health conditions directly at the bedside of patient. Although there are no statistically significant differences in regard to complications [2] , percutaneous methods compared to the surgical approach reduce costs and time of intervention [3] . Currently, the percutaneous tracheostomy have reached a significant standard of safety and efficacy so as to restrict the indications for open surgery only to those few pathologies with reduced access to the anterior surface of the neck.…”
