Faraday Rotation and Hysteresis Properties of Ferrite Thin Films

Abstract: Faraday rotation measurements on ferrimagnetic oxides have so far been limited to single crystals which are rendered transparent by grinding. In the present studies films of NiFe20. and CoFe20. of thickness 1000-8000 ..t, suitable for optical studies are prepared by oxidizing films of the alloys NiFe2 and CoFe2 sputtered on silica substrates. The Faraday rotation is determined with the film magnetized along axes both normal and parallel to its surface. Using the latter arrangement, optical hysteresis loops are… Show more

“…The specific Faraday rotation for Pt600 and Pt1100 samples are 5.3 × 10 3 and 2.2 × 10 3 degree cm −1 , respectively. Similar specific Faraday rotation is reported for ferromagnetic samples such as ZnFe 2 O 4 [27], NiFe 2 O 4 [47], Gd 3−x Bi x Fe 5 O 12 [48], are of the order of 10 3 -10 5 deg cm −1 at visible wavelength. For TI-600 and TI-1100 samples the Faraday rotation is larger than Pt600 samples as shown in figure 5(b).…”

“…For instance, the Faraday rotation angle of Fe 3 O 4 thin film was reported to be 3.9 × 10 4 deg cm −1 at 632.8 nm [11]. NiFe 2 O 4 and CoFe 2 O 4 films show Faraday rotation angles about two times smaller than that of Fe 3 O 4 [11,12]. For garnet-type Gd 3−x Bi x Fe 5 O 12 , the absolute value of the Faraday rotation angle at 520 nm changes from about 5 × 10 3 to 1.2 × 10 5 deg cm −1 as x varies from 0 to 1.4 [13].…”

“…The value of VMs is thus 3.9X10 4 deg/cm for magnetite films. The average saturation magnetization of the above films was 380 G, so that V = 100 deg/cm G. Francombe et al 6 reported the Faraday rotation for NiFe204 and CoFe 2 04 films as 3X loa and 6 X loa deg/ em, respectively. However, these numbers appear to include the tancf>R term as well as the lpp/l'8 term.…”
