Haemodynamic Responses to Ethylphenylephrine (Effortil®) During Halothane‐Induced Myocardial Depression in the Dog

The haemodynamic action of ethylphenylephrine (Effortil") on halothane-induced cardiovascular depression was studied in 13 dogs. A dosage of 45 pg/kg i.v. of Effortila very applicable clinical dosagehad a marked beta-adrenergic action on the heart (increase in cardiac output, stroke volume and maximum dp/dt). A positive chronotropic effect was masked by the pressoreceptor reflex and became evident in the presence of alpha-adrenergic blockade with phenoxybenzamine. The increase of cardiac output caused a marked increase in mean arterial pressure, but total peripheral resistance remained approximately unchanged. Effortil showed a relatively low affinity towards alpha-adrenergic receptors. Renal blood flow and muscle blood flow decreased slightly. An alpha-adrenergic effect on the capacitance vessels was also seen. The action continued for more than 30 min. Ventricular arrhythmias occurred in one animal. These experimental findings confirm our clinical experiences that Effortil is a beneficial and safe agent in the treatment of halothane-induced myocardial depression and hypotension.
