Farm intensification and drivers of technology adoption in mixed dairy-crop systems in Santa Cruz, Bolivia

Abstract: The expanding demand for livestock products in developing countries is expected to drive changes in livestock farming systems, such as intensification and technological development. However, while large commercial farms can take advantage of these new opportunities, semi-subsistence agriculture will be the main option for many poor livestock keepers. Development pathways may depend on local and farm-specific conditions. In this paper we: i) typify mixed crop-dairy systems in Santa Cruz (Bolivia) from the point… Show more

“…DP is a variation of smallholder mixed crop-livestock system with a part of grazing native pasture on communal lands, within a multifunctional livestock that produces both milk and meat (FAO, 2012;Herrero et al, 2013;Oosting et al, 2014). The DP is complex, heterogeneous and influenced by several factors such as dimension, availability of resources, level of technological adoption and agroclimatic conditions (Bernués & Herrero, 2008;Oros et al, 2011). Cuevas-Reyes et al (2013) mention that the dimension is the main factor to determinate the technological level.…”

“…La problemática que presentan estos sistemas son los altos costos de producción (2) y la baja adopción de innovaciones que brindan mayor sustentabilidad económica, como son las praderas cultivadas (3) . Existen estudios indican que las variables que describen al productor y a la unidad de producción influyen en la adopción de innovaciones (4,5) . Sin embargo, estos estudios no han considerado factores cognoscitivos (creencias) y socio-psicológicos (referentes sociales), que influyen en la toma de decisiones del productor.…”

“…This heterogeneity shows a need for the characterisation of farming systems to identify opportunities for and constraints to sustainable development or enable technology adoption and innovation (Bernué s and Herrero, 2008). Deffontaines and Petit (1985) proposed a methodological approach to study a diverse pool of farms by reducing the number of individual cases to specific farm types for analysis.…”
