Mixed crop-livestock farms are widely spread in different tropical regions in the world; they contribute to food security, rural development, sustainability and poverty alleviation. The effect of scale on performance of dual purpose (DP) cattle farms was evaluated in two Mexican ecological zones: dry (DT) and wet tropics (WT). In 2011, a questionnaire of 184 items distributed into technical and social characteristics was applied to a representative sample of 3,285 farms with 50 or less cows (0.97%). The farms were classified into three groups according to their dimension: very small (1-9 cows), small (10-19 cows) and medium (20-50 cows). A general linear model (GLM) with two factors and their interactions was applied. Significant effects in dimension and ecological zone were found as well as seven interactions between both factors (p<0.05). Native pastures were used in all farms for grazing. However, small farms' herds frequently grazed on cultivated pastures and on crop residues (p<0.05). Medium farms showed the highest grazing surface, but in the WT silage and green fodder were used while in the DT dry fodders were used (p<0.001). The interactions between factors showed a bigger specialization in milk production in DT farms, whereas WT farms were more specialized in meat production. The mixed crop-livestock system in tropic region requires an increase in herd size according to farm's own productive structure, which is strongly influenced by the ecological zone. The systems would improve with the active participation of smallholders to identify and achieve best practices, higher technological adoption level and with an effective support from public and private Institutions.Additional keywords: marginalization; subsistence; dual purpose; tropics; resilience. RESUMENEl objetivo fue identificar variables que describen al productor y a la unidad de producción, así como factores cognoscitivos y sociales que influyen en el uso de praderas cultivadas por productores de leche en pequeña escala. La muestra (n=106) se dividió en productores que hacen uso de la innovación (Grupo 1, n= 55) y en productores que no la usan (Grupo 2, n= 51). Los datos se analizaron con la prueba de Mann Withney y la Teoría del Comportamiento Planeado. El uso de praderas cultivadas se vio influenciado por las variables que describen al productor y a la unidad de producción, como se observó en el Grupo 1. Este grupo presentó una mayor proporción de productores (60 %) que indicaron una intención positiva para usar praderas cultivadas, comparado con el 36 % de los productores del Grupo 2. Los productores de ambos grupos percibieron de forma similar la utilidad e importancia del uso de praderas cultivadas; sin embargo, la intención de los productores del Grupo 1 presentó una correlación significativa (P<0.05) con ambas. Otros factores que influyeron en el uso de praderas cultivadas fueron las creencias positivas, referentes sociales y las dificultades percibidas de la innovación. Se concluye que el uso de praderas cultivadas estuvo influenciado por diferentes factores para cada grupo de productores. Traditional mixed livestock cereal-and pasture-based sheep farming systems in Europe are threatened by intensification and specialisation processes. However, the intensification process does not always yield improved economic results or efficiency. This study involved a group of farmers that raised an autochthonous sheep breed (Ojinegra de Teruel) in an unfavourable area of North-East Spain. This study aimed to typify the farms and elucidate the existing links between economic performance and certain sustainability indicators (i.e. productivity, self-sufficiency and diversification). Information was obtained through direct interviews with 30 farms (73% of the farmers belonging to the breeders association). Interviews were conducted in 2009 and involved 32 indicators regarding farm structure, management and economic performance. With a principal component analysis, three factors were obtained explaining 77.9% of the original variance. This factors were named as inputs/self-sufficiency, which included the use of on-farm feeds, the amount of variable costs per ewe and economic performance; productivity, which included lamb productivity and economic autonomy; and productive orientation, which included the degree of specialisation in production. A cluster analysis identified the following four groups of farms: high-input intensive system; low-input self-sufficient system; specialised livestock system; and diversified crops-livestock system. In conclusion, despite the large variability between and within groups, the following factors that explain the economic profitability of farms were identified: (i) high feed self-sufficiency and low variable costs enhance the economic performance (per labour unit) of the farms; (ii) animal productivity reduces subsidy dependence, but does not necessarily imply better economic performance; and (iii) diversity of production enhances farm flexibility, but is not related to economic performance.
