Farm Size and Productivity: The Role of Family Labor

Abstract: In this study, we draw a theoretical model to demonstrate that small farms achieve lower total factor productivity (TFP) compared to large farms, even though their yield may be higher. We argue that taking into account family labor modifies the farm size-productivity relationship. We test our hypotheses on geocoded data from 5,645 agriculture farms in Pakistan using Pakistan household integrated economic survey 2018-19 and labor force survey 2018 combined with remote sensing data to account for farm-specific t… Show more

“…About one third of the participants were willing to practice family planning if they had the opportunity. Like in many developing countries, many urban dwellers preferred having smaller families than rural dwellers, who would want to have larger families so as to have more hands on the farm (Ayaz & Mughal, 2022;Horlu et al, 2023;Olayemi, 2012).…”

“…Family planning brings enormous bene ts to females, communities, and countries at large, and it helps women in achieving educational goals, and engage in economic activities (Starbird et al, 2016). Among the bene ts of family planning (FP) is the reduction of unintended pregnancies (Ayaz & Mughal, 2022;WHO, 2024). These bene ts extend to the reduction of the spread of HIV to newborns; reduced maternal mortality and morbidity as well as reduced neonatal, infant, and child mortality (Grant, 2016;WHO, 2024).…”

“…3 Similarly, although land area measurement using global positioning systems (GPS) brings significant improvements over self-reported data (Carletto et al, 2015(Carletto et al, , 2017Dillon et al, 2019;Kilic et al, 2017), the consumer grade GPS devices used in many of these studies are likely to suffer from some inaccuracies when applied to smaller plots (Dillon et al, 2019;Keita & Carfagna, 2009). Second, a number of recent studies have argued that the relationship between land area and agricultural productivity depends on the choice of agricultural productivity indicator used (Arag on et al, 2022;Ayaz & Mughal, 2023;Garz on Delvaux et al, 2020;Helfand & Taylor, 2021). 4 Third, a recent literature highlights the role of the edge effect, whereby productivity is higher along the plot perimeter, in explaining why small farms (and plots) appear more productive (Bevis & Barrett, 2020).…”
