Farmers’ Perception of Climate Change and Climate-Smart Agriculture in Northern Benin, West Africa

Abstract: Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) is an approach that identifies actions needed to transform and reorganize agricultural systems to effectively support agricultural development and ensure food security in the face of climate change. In this study, we assessed farmers’ perception of climate change, available CSA practices (CSAP) and the determinants of CSAP adoption in northern Benin. A list of CSAP was generated from a workshop with different stakeholders. Face-to-face interviews were then carried out with 368 f… Show more

“…One of the crucial paths to enhancing the well-being of smallholder farming communities, especially in developing nations, is through the adoption of CS-IPM [54]. This is because CS-IPM does help farmers to meet their increasingly growing demand for food via improved agricultural productivity, thus attaining food security, economic development, and poverty reduction [14,53,55]. CS-IPM practices help conserve the natural capital, especially land, more so the soil organic matter [14,56].…”

“…In order to understand the influence that various CS-IPMs have on the many basic social welfare characteristics of smallholder farmer households, this study gathered variables. This methodology has also been widely used in recent empirical meta-analysis review studies [22,47,48,52,53]. In Figure 2 below, we diagrammatically elaborate on the reviewed relevant studies and the final selection of the 61 articles considered for this review.…”

“…While some studies assessed the individual impact of each practice, others examined the combined effects. However, there may be some discussion about how or why certain practices are categorized as CSA, such as the spiritual invocation of rain (Moutouama et al, 2022) and fodder and forage production (Zampaligré and Fuchs, 2019).…”

“…Access to climate information is another crucial factor significantly influencing the adoption of CSA. Farmers equipped with reliable information on current and future temperature, rainfall, and climate conditions demonstrate a higher propensity to adopt CSA practices, including conservation agriculture, agroforestry, and crop diversification (Moutouama et al, 2022;Sisay et al, 2023). Information can be shared and received in various ways such as farm groups, extension services, mobile-based platforms, and community displays (Obi and Maya, 2021;Mujeyi et al, 2022).…”
