Farmers perception of pesticide use and genetic erosion of landraces of tetraploid wheat (Triticum spp.) in Ethiopia

Abstract: Perception of farmers' about the use of pesticides and genetic erosion of tetraploid wheat landraces of Ethiopia was assessed through focus group discussions with farmers, on-farm observations, personal interviews with farmers, by using structured questionnaires of temporal and spatial methods. “…Population growth and climate change contribute mainly to the increasing use of pesticides [161][162][163], and a higher global pesticide production is estimated in the future. Although pesticides play a significant role in improving crop yields and the production of affordable and good quality food, the increasing use of pesticides also brings a number of negative effects to the environment and human health [163].…”

“…In addition, owing to large populations, farmers in developing countries are under increasing pressure to use pesticides to maintain their subsistence livelihoods [4,148]. Furthermore, farmers in developing countries do not have enough opportunities for education and training, hence they do not fully understand the chemical toxicity and the methods for the safe application of chemicals used in agricultural and household activities to control pests and diseases [153]. They also do not have enough power to control external forces, including market and trade liberalization and internal policies [127].…”
