Fasciola hepatica reinfection potentiates a mixed Th1/Th2/Th17/Treg response and correlates with the clinical phenotypes of anemia

Abstract: BackgroundFascioliasis is a severe zoonotic disease of worldwide extension caused by liver flukes. In human fascioliasis hyperendemic areas, reinfection and chronicity are the norm and anemia is the main sign. Herein, the profile of the Th1/Th2/Th17/Treg expression levels is analyzed after reinfection, correlating them with their corresponding hematological biomarkers of morbidity.Methodology/Principal findingsThe experimental design reproduces the usual reinfection/chronicity conditions in human fascioliasis … Show more

“…The results obtained indicate that altiplanic sheep and cattle should be considered the main animal reservoir species involved in F. hepatica transmission and therefore also of the infection and reinfection risks of humans and which have immunological and clinical consequences (90,91). The infections and reinfections in children are detected in the monitorings by appropriate coprological techniques (37,92) in between yearly mass treatment campaigns implemented in this hyperendemic area.…”

“…Although CD4 + Th17 cells play a role in the control of a variety of parasitic infections, the role of IL-17 produced by CD4 + Th17 cells in immunity to F. gignatica has not been clearly defined [ 38 , 39 ]. Our current and previous studies [ 8 ], demostrated that IL-17 may play a role in the inflammatory process during early F. gigantica infection.…”

“…In schistosomiasis and filariasis, it was observed in individuals with a chronic pathology that the parasite causes a damaging immunopathology, with high levels of Th1-, Th2-, and Th17-type cytokines being found in serum (42). Reinfection with Fasciola hepatica potentiates a mixed Th1/Th2/Th17/regulatory T cell response in Wistar rats (43). A mixed Th1/Th2 cytokine response was also observed in mice treated with Taenia solium metacestode antigens (44).…”
