Fast and accurate 3D topography measurement based on a novel synthesis pattern method

Abstract: Prompt and accurate measurement of the three-dimensional (3D) contours of complex surfaces is currently a key research direction. In the current study, we presented a fast grayscale stripe synthesis method based on focused binary patterns. Specifically, by encoding a group of binary patterns, the patterns were captured by the camera within one exposure time cycle and synthesized into a grayscale-intensity triangular wave stripe pattern. Importantly, this method utilized the fast projection rate of the binary p… Show more

“…In the proposed method, as the binary lines are evenly spaced in the projector pattern, the maximum value of the relative projector coordinate, ∆v, will be restricted by the distance between two adjacent lines. Just like the wrapped phase map in the phase-shifting method [4], the relative projector coordinates ∆v (x and y) also can be converted into the absolute projector coordinate v (x and y) using the phase-unwrapping method [20]:…”

“…In conventional FPP system, a set of 8-bit sinusoidal patterns will be projected onto the object surface. As an 8-bit gray pattern has limited projection rate (within 120 Hz), the measurement speed of FPP system is thus restricted [4].…”

“…This method uses fringes with only two light intensity values, 0 and 255, to eliminate the nonlinear effects of the projection system and avoid the need for defocusing adjustment of the projector. Zheng et al [13] attempted to encode multiple binary images and superimpose them to form a triangular fringe pattern. Yan et al [14] encoded binary fringes based on the intensity values within one cycle of the sinusoidal fringe and then synthesized sinusoidal fringes.…”
