Fast Estimation of Line-Start Reluctance Machine Parameters by Finite Element Analysis

Abstract: Abstract—This paper compares two methods to compute the pa- rameters of a line-start synchronous reluctance (LSSR) machine, by means of finite element analysis. In both methods, both the impact of the skin effect on the rotor parameters and the impact of saturation on magnetizing inductances are taken into account. The first method is based on an equivalent single-phase model of the machine. A pulsating flux is imposed along the d- and q-axes separately, so as to compute the machine parameters along both d- and q… Show more

“…In other words, rotor bars on the rotor q-axis affect R rd , while the rotor bars on the rotor d-axis influence on R rq . This fact is also verified by analysis of different geometries using FEA and the proposed method of parameter estimation in [17]. The obtained R rd and R rq for different geometries are reported in Table 6.…”

“…This geometry is shown in Figure 7 after adding the rotor cage bars marked with "a," "b," "c," and "d" labels and radial magnetic bridges. The motor parameters are estimated using the proposed method in [17] and reported in Table 5 , respectively. It is clear that the smaller dq-axis rotor resistances provide higher electromagnetic torque during synchronization.…”

“…Sometimes the reluctance rotor includes magnets, thus increasing the torque generated by a synchronous motor. The solution of the self-start-up problem, in synchronous reluctance motors, consist in selection one of the possible solutions: additional use of the classic rotor cage (for the "classical" and the flux-barrier rotors [6]), partial or complete filling of rotor recesses using e.g. aluminum [7,8], which is available for the fluxbarrier rotor.…”

“…Thus, in practice system identification method is an ideal technology for directly estimating the needed parameters based on regularly measured signals instead of using additional measurement instruments [8]. Algorithms such as recursive least-squares (RLS) [13] [14], extended Kalman filter (EKF) [15] [16], model reference adaptive system (MRAS) [17] [18], finite-element method [19], adaptive estimation methods [20] and artificial neural networks (ANN) [21] are usually employed for the design of parameter estimators. Owing to linear parameterization for the RLS algorithm, the RLS estimator usually suffers from the noise characteristics and may lead to the reduction of solution accuracy [13].…”

“…In reality, the real parameter value usually depends on a variable operating condition caused by the changes of temperature and/or load. The FE (finite element) based parameters estimator proposed in [19] requires a high computational load and it may be challenging task to use this method to estimate PMSM parameters due to the complex computations. Some ANNs have also been proposed for estimating parameters of PMSM in [21].…”
