Fast growth rate of a right atrial myxoma

Abstract: Primary cardiac tumors are rare, with an incidence between 0.0017 and 0.19%, and are asymptomatic in up to 72% of cases. Approximately 75% of tumors are benign, and nearly 50% of these are myxomas. Concerning location, 75% of myxomas are in the left atrium, 15 to 20% in the right atrium, and more rarely in the ventricles. The finding of cardiac myxomas usually implies immediate surgical excision to prevent embolic events and sudden cardiac death. Reports with documented growth rate are rare, and the actual gro… Show more

“…Thrombus is a differential to consider in cardiac tumors and has been reported admixed in myxomas with the potential to overestimate the tumor size. 10,11 The histopathology in our case revealed extensive areas of hemorrhage, and inflammatory infiltrates with no thrombus. The exact mechanisms promoting rapid growth in myxomas are based on a few subjects but reports imply that both cellular proliferation and hemorrhagic foci may be responsible.…”

“…Cardiac myxomas rarely occur in the right atrium (RA; 10-20%) [1]. They usually require immediate surgical excision to prevent embolic events and sudden cardiac death [2]. However, surgery may sometimes be di cult because of the patient's condition.…”
