Fast Semi-Analytical Design for Single-FSS-Layer Circuit-Analog Absorbers

Abstract: In this paper, analytical, empirical, and numerical techniques are integrated for analyzing and synthesizing circuit analog (CA) absorbers based on a single-layer frequency-selective surface (FSS). The proposed design approach dramatically reduces the number of full-wave simulations required for global optimization, so that the potential of fundamental FSS geometries can be exhaustively exploited. With the semi-analytical algorithm, the near optimal bandwidth-thickness can be quickly and reliably calculated fo… Show more

“…The proposed methodology utilizes a well-established theory of equivalent transmission line (Eq-TL) model and transverse resonance method (TRM) [1]. Both concepts are popularly explained in literature [10], [11], [12], [13], [14], [15], [18], [19], [20], [21], [31], [32], [33], [34], [35], [36], [37]. Therefore, we refrain to explain them in detail here.…”

“…The absorption properties of the MAs, depend on both electrical parameters (e.g., permittivity, permeability, and particle morphology) and physical parameters (e.g., thickness of the sheet) of the material [11]. For the efficient development of MAs, various techniques, such as multilayering of lossy material [12], developing the composite materials [11], and coating of the resistive sheets (e.g., Salisbury Screen and Jaumann [13], [14]), circuit analog absorbers (CAAs) [10], [15], [16], and meta-materials [17], [18], [19] have been proposed. However, efficient implementation of these techniques requires a suitable optimization method or parametric analysis, according to the requirement and suitability of the methodology.…”

“…There have been many designs of FSS absorbers considering their bandwidth, polarization, and their angular behavior. In previous works, the periodic structure of the FSS is used to absorb the radiated power in open space [14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. However, our aim is to design a small and thin waveguide absorber which is installed at the end of a waveguide.…”
