Fast silicon photomultiplier improves signal harvesting and reduces complexity in time-domain diffuse optics

Abstract: Abstract:We present a proof of concept prototype of a time-domain diffuse optics probe exploiting a fast Silicon PhotoMultiplier (SiPM), featuring a timing resolution better than 80 ps, a fast tail with just 90 ps decay time-constant and a wide active area of 1 mm 2 . The detector is hosted into the probe and used in direct contact with the sample under investigation, thus providing high harvesting efficiency by exploiting the whole SiPM numerical aperture and also reducing complexity by avoiding the use of cu… Show more

“…These results are consistent with what inferred from recent studies showing possible involvement of collagen in breast cancer onset and progression 4 , and will open new screening potential if confirmed on a larger scale. Impressive growth on photonics components are now opening the way to deployment of small, cost-effective, and portable time-resolved diffuse optics devices 10,11 , which could be used in simple and operator independent breast cancer risk screening programs at the level of the general practitioner. …”

“…These results demonstrate that μ a estimated from higher order moment analysis of a single DTOF is more sensitive to absorption properties over a range of layers compared to the sTR method. Applying the latter method to TR-NIRS data acquired at multiple source-detector distances may provide a means of resolving the different absorption properties of heterogeneous medium -particularly considering the advent of low-cost TR detectors [31].…”

“…In 2015, we demonstrated the possibility of employing SiPMs for TD diffuse optics, 8,11,12 obtaining timing resolutions down to 57 ps full-width at half maximum (FWHM). Since it was used in contact with the sample, we obtain high diffused photon harvesting efficiency thanks principally to the possibility of avoiding cumbersome fibers and lenses, thus exploiting the whole device NA (close to 1).…”

“…In particular, with respect to our previous probe, 11 we directly integrated an avalanche signal amplification stage close to the SiPM, thus further reducing the size of the detection channel and improving the signal immunity to electromagnetic interferences. The whole electronics was packaged inside a plastic screw holder compatible with the electroencephalography (EEG) standard cap for measurement of the brain.…”
