FAST User's Guide - Updated August 2005

Abstract: Revision Date Description 1.00 09-Jul-2002 First publication. Supports FAST v4.0. 1.10 04-Sep-2002 Inserted an additional output channel (TipSpdRat or TSR) and additional prefixes ("-", "_", "m", or "M") for reversing the sign of the selected output channels. Still supports FAST v4.0. 1.20 28-Feb-2003 Clarified the descriptions of several input variables. 1.21 31-Mar-2003 Replaced drivetrain references from "rotational" to "torsional." 1.22 03-Apr-2003 Fixed the labels on the drawings of the coordinate systems… Show more

“…The turbine model employed in this work is the NREL 5MW turbine [19] and the simulations are carried out on FAST [20]. The high-fidelity turbine model is of much greater complexity than the model (25) employed in the estimator and with the exception of the yaw axis, all degrees-of-freedom were enabled, including flap-wise and edge-wise blade modes, in addition to the tower and shaft dynamics.…”

“…The indicial response of several airfoil shapes is determined using a panel code, and then approximated by a two-term exponential function; the exponential function is similar to Jones's expression for the flat plate, and is defined by four indicial response coefficients, eq. (6).…”

“…Unsteady aerodynamic forces in attached flow are frequently described in the time domain using indicial formulations, as described by Beddoes [1] and Leishman [2]. Wind turbine simulation tools based on this approach include, among others, the aeroelastic code HAWC2 [3,4], Bladed [5], and FAST [6,7].…”

“…In order to take into account the spatial variability of wind speeds, it is common to take into account the coherence function which can be interpreted as the correlation measure of different spectra. According to Davenport [4], the vertical coherence can be expressed as:…”
