FatalAcinetobacter baumaniiNecrotizing Fasciitis following Open Reduction Internal Fixation in a Polytrauma Patient

Abstract: Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon and potentially fatal infection that can affect the epidermis, dermis, and more commonly the subcutaneous, fascia, and muscle layers. NF is usually caused by toxin-producing bacteria with a relatively fast progression associated with severe surrounding tissue destruction. Early diagnosis and management are crucial factors for survival. Broad-spectrum antibiotics along with surgical debridement, sometimes multiple, are needed in order to stop or slow down the progression of … Show more

“…A. baumannii in Lebanon was mostly implicated in ventilator associated pneumoniae [15,16], urinary tract, intra-abdominal, blood and wound infections [17][18][19]. Furthermore, unique cases of necrotizing fasciitis caused by multi-drug resistant A. baumannii were also reported [20,21]. In one of the aforementioned necrotizing fasciitis cases, the strain was only sensitive to amikacin and polymyxin, challenging therefore the available treatment [21].…”

“…In fact, one of the first confirmed cases in which A. baumannii was identified as the sole microbial cause of human necrotizing fasciitis was reported in 2009 (Charnot- Katsikas et al, 2009). Since then, at least ten more cases of human necrotizing fasciitis with A. baumannii as the sole etiological agent have been described in the literature (Corradino et al, 2010;Salvador et al, 2010;Sullivan et al, 2010;Wagner et al, 2011;Clemente et al, 2012;DeMuro et al, 2012;Hachimi et al, 2013;Oymacı et al, 2014;Sinha et al, 2014;Nehme et al, 2018;Rebai et al, 2018;Goret et al, 2019;Matthews et al, 2019).…”
