Fatal Septic Internal Jugular Vein-Sigmoid Sinus Thrombosis Associated with a Malpositioned Central Venous Catheter

Abstract: Septic internal jugular vein-sigmoid sinus thrombosis (IJV-SST) associated with a malpositioned central venous catheter is a rare condition. It is potentially life-threatening and necessitates early diagnosis and rapid administration of appropriate medications. Unfortunately, it is difficult to diagnose due to vague clinical presentations. Several studies such as CT, MRI, and cerebral angiography should be performed and carefully examined to help make the diagnosis. We report a case of septic IJV-SST due to a … Show more

“…Despite its widespread utilization and apparent procedural simplicity, complications can still arise, some of which can be severe. 10 , 11 , 15 17 Traditionally, CVC placements relied on anatomical landmarks for guidance. However, incorporating ultrasound guidance has notably increased the success rate of catheter placements and substantially reduced the relative risk of complications by up to 73%.…”

“…Tromboz etiyolojisine yönelik yapılan tetkiklerinde hastamızın geçirilmiş otite bağlı mastoidit ve sonrasında ona bağlı SVT atağı geçirdiği kabul edildi. Literatüre baktığımızda septik SVT'lerin baş ve boyun enfeksiyonları (otitis media, mastoidit, sinüzit) sonucunda oluştuğunu ve bütün SVT'lerin %18'inin bu grupta olduğunu görüyoruz 11,12 .…”
