Fate of carbofuran and its effects on aquatic macroinvertebrates in Canadian prairie parkland ponds

Abstract: : A multipond study was conducted in 1986 to determine the fate of carbofuran and its effects on aquatic macroinvertebrates in alkaline, Canadian prairie parkland ponds. Four ponds were sprayed with carbofuran in late July; four other ponds served as controls. Sixteen hours after spraying, concentrations of carbofuran in the water column ranged from 9-32 μg l(-1). After 124 h, concentrations had declined to 3-12μg l(-1). Carbofuran partitioned into submersed aquatic plants, ranging from three to 46 times great… Show more

“…but also by the distribution of the active ingredient over different environmental compartments such as sediment, organic and inorganic particulate material, aquatic plants (e.g., Hill, 1989;Brock et al, 1993;Brock, 1994, Samsøe-Petersen et al, 2001;Hand et al, 2001) and volatilisation from the water (e.g., Larkin and Tjeerdma, 2000). Initial half-life values of dissolved organophosphates and carbamates in the water of stagnant (model) ecosystems are in the order of less than 1-10 days (Crossland and Bennett, 1984;Hanazato and Yasuno, 1990;Lahr and Diallo, 1993;Crum and Brock, 1994;Tanner and Knuth, 1995;Wayland and Boag, 1995;Giddings et al, 1996). In the case of pyrethroids, initial half-life in the water columns are in the order of less than 1 h to 3 days (Stephenson et al, 1986;Heinis and Knuth, 1992;Fairchild et al, 1992b;Farmer et al, 1995;Hand et al, 2001;Roessink et al, in press).…”

“…Experimental studies of lentic freshwater macroinvertebrate community responses to pollutants are still in their infancy. However, some studies have been published (e.g., Hurlbert et al, 1972;Crossland and Bennett, 1989;Van Wijngaarden and Leeuwangh, 1989;Lozano et al, 1992;Fairchild et al, 1992;Van Wijngaarden et al, 1995;Farmer et al, 1995;Wayland and Boag, 1995).…”

“…In recent years, the insecticide carbofuran (2,3-dihydro-2-2 dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl methylcarbamate), commercial brand Furadan 100G ® , has been among the most often used. However, its fate in aquatic systems continues to be almost unknown (NRCC, 1979), and a better understanding of its effects on these ecosystems is necessary (Wayland and Boag, 1995). The herbicide metsulfuron-methyl {methyl 2 [[[[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl]benzoate}, commercial brand Ally ® , is widely used in rice crops to control broadleaf weeds (Rodrigues and Almeida, 2005).…”
