In this study, anammox bacteria were rapidly enriched in sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBRs) with different inoculations. The activated sludge taken from a sequencing batch reactor was used and inoculated to SBBR1, while SBBR2 was seeded with stored anaerobic sludge from an upflow anaerobic fixed bed (2-year stored at 5-15 °C). Nitrogen removal performance, anammox activity, biofilm characteristics and variation of the microbial community were evaluated. The maximum total nitrogen loading rate (NLR) of SBBR1 gradually reached to 1.62 kgN/(m³/day) with a removal efficiency higher than 88% and the NLR of SBBR2 reached to 1.43 kgN/(m³/day) with a removal efficiency of 86%. SBBR2 was more stable compared to SBBR1. These results, combined with molecular techniques such as scanning electron microscope, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism, indicated that different genera of anammox bacteria became dominant. This research also demonstrates that SBBR is a promising bioreactor for starting up and enriching anammox bacteria.

The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of moderate temperatures on the efficiency of a full-scale anaerobic treatment system consisting of a primary sedimentation unit (PST) and an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR, approx. 10 m 3 ). Therefore, two trials with different test setups in series were carried out (1st trial: continuous load; 2nd trial: diurnal variation load). The plant was fed with municipal wastewater and operated at temperatures between 8 and 24°C. The mean efficiency of the ABR was low, compared to the one of the PST. At 10°C, only 10% of the COD was removed. The COD (chemical oxygen demand) removal efficiency of the plant (PST + ABR) averaged 50%. At low temperatures, volatile fatty acids began to accumulate. In both trials, the contents of total suspended solids in the sludge bed differed distinctly and influenced the effort for desludging. • Practitioner points• The operation of ABR in combined collection systems depends on the efficiency of the pretreatment unit. • At cold temperatures, an ABR has no advantages compared to conventional pretreatment processes. • For use under moderate conditions, the design must be adjusted.

Anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) have remarkably strong ability of coupling ammonia and nitrite into nitrogen gas and have been regarded as one of the most promising techniques for wastewater nitrogen removal. However, these anaerobic autotrophs are vulnerable to some environmental factors such as dissolved oxygen (DO), organic carbon, or antibiotics, which are inevitable in actual sewage or industrial wastewater. From an ecological perspective, the factors may not directly inhibit AnAOB but stimulate side populations. In this sense, it is necessary to understand the specific responses of AnAOB competitors to certain ecological factors (EFs). To date, most studies have only focused on direct effects of EFs to AnAOB but have not considered side populations. In this study, the impact of five EFs (DO, carbon, metal ion, antibiotics, and temperature) on AnAOB enrichments was assessed in a mixed-culture anammox reactor, which contained AnAOB, aerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AeAOB), nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), and denitrifying bacteria. Batch test results showed that oxygen did not inhibit AnAOB due to the protection of AeAOB and NOB, and both inorganic and organic carbon (acetate) enhanced AnAOB activity. Low concentration (0.04 mM) of iron was beneficial to AnAOB and AeAOB, but AnAOB were inhibited by a high concentration (0.26 mM) of iron. The tolerance of AnAOB enrichments to chloramphenicol was much stronger than that to amoxicillin and oxytetracycline. Temperature is a critical EF to AnAOB enrichments.
