Fatigue Crack Length Measurement of Sputtered Metal Film for RFID-based Smart Stress Memory Patch

Abstract: A new sensor, which can estimate fatigue damage parameters such as number of cycles and stress amplitude, was proposed and fabricated based on smart stress memory patch. This sensor composed of an ion-sputtered metal film deposited on the smart stress memory patch (a thin copper specimen). The crack extension of the sensor during fatigue test could be estimated by measuring the electrical resistance change of the ion-sputtered metal film. The relationship between normalized electrical resistance and the crack … Show more

“…In addition to the monitoring of concrete cracks, research on RFID technology for crack monitoring and detection in metal materials has also been extensive [39][40][41][42][43]. Li et al [44] proposed a structural health monitoring sensor utilizing RFID technology, which incorporated three RFID tags for identification, as well as a circular patch antenna for crack detection.…”

“…[6][7][8][9][10][11] Sensor in smart patch consists of a thin metal sheet with a pre-crack, and number of fatigue cycles and stress amplitude on structure can be estimated from fatigue crack growth in the sensor. Since the accumulation of the fatigue damage is memorized in the sensor itself, it requires no power supply, wiring, continuous monitoring or high-speed communication.…”
