Fatigue damage monitoring and analysis of aged asphalt concrete using acoustic emission technique

Abstract: This paper presents an Acoustic Emission characterization of the damage behavior of asphalt concrete trapezoidal specimen subjected to bending fatigue loading. An experimental fatigue tests campaign is carried out on a damaged asphalt concrete extracted from an in-service highway pavement, built in 2001. Tests were performed in strain controlled mode with an amplitude of 175 µstrain, a loading frequency of 25 Hz, and at 10°C. Failure criteria based on modulus decrease are analysed to determine the fatigue life… Show more

“…Moreover, several other types of mechanical tests [84][85][86][87][88] and comprehensive performance inspections [89][90][91][92][93][94] can be also conducted by numerical methods. Papagiannakis et al [95] built a DEM model of the asphalt mixture using its microstructure obtained by CT technology to evaluate the plastic deformation behavior of the asphalt mixture subjected to the loading of the asphalt mixture performance test (AMPT).…”

“…Subsequently, further costs for maintenance and rehabilitation would be incurred [10]. Terefore, the analysis of fracture is important to characterise the failure mechanism of the pavement over its life span and to develop models for pavement management services [11][12][13].…”

“…Liang et al [14] established a correlation between the fracture damage of an asphalt mixture under a freeze-thaw cycle and its AE signal. In terms of aging, AE technology was used to evaluate the road performance of asphalt mixtures with different aging levels [15,16]. Recently, the characteristics of moisture damage of asphalt mixtures have attracted researchers' attention.…”
