Fatigue Performance of Recycled Hot Mix Asphalt: A Laboratory Study

Abstract: The paper introduces and analyses the results of an experimental trial on the fatigue resistance of recycled hot mix asphalt for road pavements. Based on the gyratory compaction and the indirect tensile strength test, the mix design procedure has optimized nine different mixes, considering both conventional limestone and Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP), the latter used at different quantities, up to 40% by weight of the aggregate. A standard bitumen and two polymer modified binders were used for the productio… Show more

“…This result indicates that the asphalt mixture containing the softer bitumen and crushed aggregate, has more resistance against crack damage, compared to other combinations. This result has been presented in the study of Zaumanis, Mashaan and Pasetto which approve the experimental output of this research [16,17,18]. On the other hand, using PPA has a significant effect on the potential of crack resistance, especially in the dosage of 1%.…”

“…It is also observed that the asphalt mixture using #70 asphalt decreased faster in FI in contrast to the specimen with SBS modified binders, especially between two aging durations. The fact that the SBS modified asphalt mixture aged less than base asphalt was also found by previous studies [17][18][19]. …”

“…Presently in USA and Japan, asphalt pavement material removed from use is recycled into new pavements. Field performance studies confirmed that the performance of mixes containing RAP was equivalent to that of virgin mixes [11][12][13].…”
