Fatigue strength of tungsten inert gas-repaired weld joints in airplane critical structures

Abstract: a b s t r a c tIn this work the effect of Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) repairs on the axial fatigue strength of an AISI 4130 steel welded joint used in airframe critical to the flight-safety was investigated. Fatigue tests were performed at room temperature on 0.89 mm thick hot-rolled plates with constant amplitude and load ratio of R = 0.1, at 20 Hz frequency. Monotonic tensile tests, optical metallography and microhardness, residual stress and weld geometric factors measurements were also performed. The f… Show more

“…The fatigue strengths of bcc metals usually approach their yield strengths, even for relatively high–yield strength materials. As an example, bcc steels and eutectoid steels are known to display high fatigue strength ( 38 ) in addition to their high yield or tensile strength. The fatigue properties we report for a list of bcc alloys and metals ( 39 , 40 ) (Fig.…”

“…Accurate assessment of fatigue life can be carried out by the strain-life approach as it considers the plastic-forming events existing in the local area. This strain-life approach is generally used for ductile materials; as a low cycle fatigue of the smaller components [12][13][14] (within 10 3 cycles) [15][16][17], do not need extensive crack observations or high operational costs for their failure. Fatigue behavior of engineering materials is very sensitive to mean stress, geometric design, surface effect, metallic variables and environment [18].…”

“…Ghosh (2003) verificou a influência do pré e do pós-aquecimento na soldagem de aço Cr-Mo aplicando os processos SMAW (Shilded Metal arcWelding) e GTAW, realizando testes em várias temperaturas. O pós-aquecimento melhorou as propriedades, ao que indica até certa temperatura, o teste realizado a 800º diminuiu a resistência mecânica causando trincas/fraturas durante o ensaio de tração [12].…”
