The objective of this study was to characterize Nelore cattle on central performance tests in pasture, ranked by the visual classification method EPMURAS (structure, precocity, muscle, navel, breed, posture, and sexual characteristics), and to estimate genetic and phenotypic correlations between these parameters, including visual as well as production traits (initial and final weight on test, weight gain, and weight corrected for 550 days). The information used in the study was obtained on 21,032 Nelore bulls which were participants in the central performance test at pasture of the Brazilian Association for Zebu Breeders (ABCZ). Heritabilities obtained were from 0.19 to 0.50. Phenotypic correlations were positive from 0.70 to 0.97 between the weight traits, from 0.65 to 0.74 between visual characteristics, and from 0.29 to 0.47 between visual characteristics and weight traits. The genetic correlations were positive ranging from 0.80 to 0.98 between the characteristics of structure, precocity and musculature, from 0.13 to 0.64 between the growth characteristics, and from 0.41 to 0.97 between visual scores and weight gains. Heritability and genetic correlations indicate that the use of visual scores, along with the selection for growth characteristics, can bring positive results in selection of beef cattle for rearing on pasture.

“…The result obtained for P120 (126 ± 20.11 kg) was similar to those found in the literature for Nelore, 126 ± 20.11 kg by GARNERO et al (2001) and 121 kg by SIQUEIRA et al (2003). The mean value found for P210 (184 ± 29.27 kg) was similar to that found by Conceição et al (2005) and Payá et al (2007) The results observed in this study for the characteristic P365 (238 ± 38.64 kg) has also been similar to those found by Payá et al (2007) For P450, the result (277 ± 46.96 kg) was similar than those found by Siqueira et al (2003) and Sena (2013) The Table 3 shows the estimates of (co) variance components and genetic parameters for growth traits in Nelore Mocho cattle. The aim of this paper is estimate the (co)variances components in the genetic parameters to the growth traits in Nelore Mocho cattle, raised in Cerrado biome, using Bayesian statistics. The information obtained from 48,063 cattle, provenient of Nelore Mocho herd, born from 1987 to 2009, participant of Breeder and Research Nacional Association's (ANCP) Nelore Brazil Program. The standard weight in 120 (P120), 210 (P210), 365 (P365), 450 (P450) years old has been evaluated, the weight gain from the birth to the weaning (GPND) and the weight gain from weaning to yearling (GPDS). The (co)variances components and genetic parameters have been estimated under univariate analyses considering the Bayesian statistics animal model by the MTGSAM (Multiple Trait using Gibbs Sampler under Animal Model). The estimated values to direct heritability were from medium to high magnitude in standard weights (0.23 to 0.33) and the weight gain (0.18 and 0.24), in creates and recreates phase, respectively. These results indicate the genetic variability existence in Nelore Mocho herd to growth traits, showing effective genetic growth when using the direct selection of these features in genetic improvement programs.

We analyzed the pregnancy rate (PR) and birth rate (BR) of Nellore cows raised extensively in the Cerrado/Pantanal during 4 mating seasons (2009)(2010)(2011)(2012), assessing the relationship with the temperature and humidity index (THI) and the effect of the year and breeding season. We used information from 2,116 cows, which were categorized as either multiparous (n = 1430), primiparous (n = 338), or nulliparous (n = 348). In the months of the breeding season (December-February), temperature and relative humidity data were collected to calculate the temperature and humidity index (THI). An ANOVA was performed with a model that included sources of variation from the fixed effects of category of cow and year on PR and BR; and a linear regression analysis and correlation between THI and PR and BR. We observed a significant effect (p < 0.05) on PR. We classified the average across breeding seasons as a moderate THI. The THI of the breeding seasons showed high and significant (p < 0.05) effects only on the nulliparous BR, and low values in other categories. It is concluded that the seasonal THI was not related to the performance of cows, except BR in nulliparous cows.Keywords: beef cattle, environmental effect, reproductive efficiency.Interação do ambiente com desempenho reprodutivo de matrizes Nelores criadas extensivamente no ecótono Cerrado/Pantanal RESUMO. Analisou-se taxa de prenhez (TP) e de natalidade (TN) de matrizes Nelores criadas extensivamente no Cerrado/Pantanal, acasaladas durante 4 estações de monta natural (2009 a 2012), avaliando relação com índice de temperatura e umidade (ITU) e efeito do ano da estação de monta. Utilizaram-se 2.116 informações de matrizes, pertencentes às categorias de multíparas (n = 1430), primíparas (n = 338) e nulíparas (n = 348). Nos meses de estação de monta (dezembro a fevereiro) coletaram-se informações da temperatura e umidade relativa do ar, para o cálculo de índice de temperatura e umidade (ITU). Realizaram-se análise de variância com um modelo contendo como fontes de variação os efeitos fixos de categoria e ano de estação de monta sob a TP e TN; e análise da regressão linear e correlação entre o ITU e a TP e TN. Observaram-se efeito significativo (p < 0,05) de categoria sob a TP. Classificou-se o ITU médio entre as estações de monta como moderado. O ITU das estações de monta apresentou relação alta e significativa (p < 0,05) apenas na TN das nulíparas, e baixas tendências de relação com as demais. Conclui-se que o ano da estação de monta e o ITU não apresentaram relação com desempenho das matrizes, exceto as nulíparas considerando ITU e TN.
