“…Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) play important roles in bivalve growth and development [31,51]. DHA has been shown to be integral in maintaining the membrane structure and functional integrity of tissues, and EPA has been shown to play a vital role in growth [52,53]; more importantly, as bivalves have limited ability to synthesize these FAs, they must be provided through their diet [25,54,55].…”

“…As a result of the hydrolysis of lipids during digestion, much of the nutritional value of lipids is related to the FA profile (Sánchez-Lazo & Martínez-Pita 2014). The n -3 PUFA, DHA, and EPA are vital for growth and larval development and, as bivalves are thought to be unable to synthesize these FA, they must be acquired through diet (Soudant et al 1998, Patil et al 2007, Kapranova et al 2019), although there is some evidence to suggest that low levels of synthesis may occur based on studies with Pacific oysters (Waldock & Holland 1984). Both DHA and EPA are needed to maintain cell membrane structure and tissue integrity and are important for membrane function (Marty et al 1992, Hendriks et al 2003, Gagné et al 2010).…”

“…In late August-early September, an adult mussel throws larvae (glochidia) into the water column [21,26,[28][29][30]77]. Mollusks can actively accumulate lipids during gametogenesis [78,79]. The lipid content in the mantle of the female bivalve M. galloprovincialis increases during the reproductive cycle [73,74].…”
