Fatty Degeneration of the Paraspinal Muscle in Patients With Degenerative Lumbar Kyphosis

Abstract: Quantitative analysis using magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scanning showed differences in paraspinal muscle volume and fatty degeneration between patients with DLK and healthy volunteers. This evaluation method may be useful for measuring the extent of paraspinal muscle degeneration.

“…6,24,25 We previously reported that IMCLs using MRS analysis in the Mm of patients with CLBP were significantly higher than in asymptomatic volunteers. 26 Some reports have described the associations of spinopelvic alignment with LBP [27][28][29] and fatty atrophy of Mm; 7,30 however, the association of IMCLs and EMCLs with spinopelvic alignment in patients with CLBP remains unclear. The aims of the present study were to analyze IMCLs and EMCLs of the Mm using MRS in CLBP and control groups and to identify possible correlations with spinopelvic alignment.…”

“…By contrast, a human study on paraspinal muscle size and fat infiltration showed higher intrarater (0.910) and inter-rater reliability (0.890) for MRI than for CT (intrarater reliability 0.780, inter-rater reliability 0.650). 14 Not surprisingly the CSA is more reliably measured by MRI than by CT in human subjects because human muscles are larger and high-field scanners (1.5–3.0 T) are generally used. 14 22 …”
