Faunistic study of sandflies in Greece

Abstract: A faunistic study of phlebotomine sandflies was carried out on the mainland and on four islands in Greece between 1999 and 2004. Sandflies were collected in 18 areas, and the population structure was observed and recorded. A total of 10 species were identified; their distribution is presented here. Of these, the species Phlebotomus neglectus Tonnoir and P. perfiliewi Parrot (Diptera: Psychodidae), epidemiologically the most important vectors of leishmaniases and sandfly fever in Greece, were shown to be presen… Show more

“…17,20,21 Parasite typing by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis (MLEE, isoenzyme analysis). The parasites, isolated from patients and dogs, were typed by starch gel electrophoresis using 15 Sand fly data. Recent data, recording sandfly presence in Greece, was used from different, already published, studies.…”

“…Recent data, recording sandfly presence in Greece, was used from different, already published, studies. [15][16][17] In all cases, sampling was carried out during the sand fly season (May to October) using CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) miniature light traps and A4 paper sticky traps (in some cases mouth and electric powered aspirators were also used). The traps were set for one or more nights at various peridomestic, domestic, or other locations.…”

“…L. infantum is the responsible species for the clinical manifestations of visceral leishmaniasis (and some cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis), while the vector species that transfer this type of parasite are Phlebotomus neglectus, P. tobbi and P. perfiliewi [6][7][8][9]. Anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis is also present in Greece, caused by L. tropica, which is transmitted by P. sergenti [6].…”
