FDG PET/CT of Intercostal Schwannoma

Abstract: Intercostal schwannoma is rare. We report FDG PET/CT findings of intercostal schwannoma in a 66-year-old woman. The tumor contains both solid and cystic components with intense FDG activity in the solid component. Postsurgical pathology diagnosis revealed schwannoma.

“…18 F-FDG PET/CT can also detect LMC [21]; however, it is likely less sensitive compared to MRI, which offers superior tissue contrast, high-resolution multiplanar reformats, and dynamic contrast-enhanced capabilities. Unfortunately, 18 F-FDG PET/CT imaging is typically not helpful for distinguishing IAC metastases from vestibular schwannomas, as both masses show increased 18 F-FDG activity [22], [23], [24].…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] Even if schwannomas are considered to be benign and rarely undergo malignant transformation, they can usually show high 18 F-FDG uptake. [6][7][8][9][10] The false-positive 18 F-FDG uptake in the schwannomas, especially in those with unexpected location, are easily lead to the misinterpretation of schwannomas as malignancy in the imaging diagnosis. [11][12][13][14][15] PS arising from the pelvis is an extremely rare subtype of schwannoma, thus the literature on its 18 F-FDG PET/MRI findings was limited.…”

“…This rare pattern usually develops in the dermis or subcutaneous tissue for only 4% to 5% of all the schwannomas and is usually confined to the head and neck or skin [1][2][3][4][5]. “…Several other case reports show that schwannomas are usually associated with a high 18F-FDG uptake on PET-CT ( 4 6 ). But, cases of schwannomas with low uptake exist even if they are less frequent ( 7 ).…”
