FDI, technical efficiency and spillovers: Evidence from Indian automobile industry

Abstract: Most emerging market economies intend to attract foreign direct investment (FDI), expecting that efficiency spillovers from FDI positively influence the productivity of domestic firms. The Indian automobile industry has been a key beneficiary of FDI, ever since the economy opened up since the early 1990s. Employing a stochastic frontier analysis (SFA), this paper first compares the technical efficiency of foreign firms (FFs) vis-à-vis domestic firms (DFs) in the Indian automobile industry for the period 2001-2… Show more

“…FDI will likely provide its subsidiary company or the foreign-acquired firm access to cutting-edge know-how and technology, eventually boosting its competitiveness and resulting in greater labor productivity and technical efficiency. The finding of this study is consistent with other studies that have found a positive relationship between FDI and technical efficiency (Ghali & Rezgui, 2011;Sur et al, 2018) and some studies that revealed a positive relationship between FDI and labor productivity (Dua & Garg, 2019;Piscitello & Rabbiosi, 2005;Vinh, 2019).…”

“…MNCs are incentivized to impart their expertise to local suppliers in the backward supply chain to optimize their production control (Hwang & Kim, 2021). And some empirical studies have revealed a resulting significant favorable influence on firm productivity and efficiency (Dua & Garg, 2019; Ghali & Rezgui, 2011; Piscitello & Rabbiosi, 2005; Sur et al, 2018; Vinh, 2019). These results suggest that FDI can drive firms to achieve their SDGs 8 and 9.…”

“…Other research on the spillover of MNEs in India has highlighted the significant technical efficiency of foreign companies compared to local companies, which ultimately benefited from technological learning (Sur et al, 2018). Domestic (local) companies can effectively benefit from FDI that promotes technological spillovers.…”
