AbstractDiscovering functional applications of metallic glasses (MGs) as heterogeneous catalysts is a fundamental and essential topic. This work reports the rapid production of sulfate radicals (SO 4 • − ) from peroxymonosulfate (PMS) using Fe 73.5 Si 13.5 B 9 Cu 1 Nb 3 glassy ribbons as catalysts for Eosin Y (EY) dye wastewater treatment. The reaction rates (k) from the experimental data reveal that the EY degradation is well fitted with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The strong electron transfer ability is characterized by electrochemical methods, presenting an advanced catalytic performance for EY degradation. Various experimental parameters, including dye concentration, catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, light intensity, pH and reaction temperature as well as the saline and natural inorganic effects, are fully investigated. The results show that the color removal of EY dye could achieve nearly 100% within 20 min. The quenching experiments are performed to verify the production of reactive species, suggesting that both •OH and SO 4 • − are produced from PMS that play significant roles for EY degradation. This critical study reveals that using Fe 73.5 Si 13.5 B 9 Cu 1 Nb 3 MGs as catalysts exhibit a superior reactivity on PMS activation in wastewater treatment. The discoveries shed lights into the study of electron transfer ability for MGs, presenting extensive prospects in the application of dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The functional application of metallic glasses in the catalytic field has widely attracted research attention due to its unique atomic structure compared to crystalline materials. It has been reported that metallic glasses can effectively activate H 2 O 2 and persulfate, yet the activation of peroxymonosulfate by metallic glasses is not studied well. In this work, the metallic glass with atomic composition of Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 was applied for investigating the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation on degradation of naphthol green B (NGB) dye. The change of surface morphology indicated the important role of oxide films during the dye degradation. The effects and first-order kinetics model of various reaction parameters were evaluated systematically, including PMS concentration, catalyst dosage, irradiation intensity, and dye concentration. The results showed that about 98% of the dye removal rate could be achieved only within 10 min under rational conditions. The reaction kinetics k of 0.1339 min −1 without ribbons was sharply improved to 0.3140 min −1 by adding 0.5 g/L ribbons, indicating the superior activation ability of Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 metallic glass. The recycling experiment revealed that the Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 ribbons exhibited the excellent surface stability and catalytic reusability for activating PMS even after reused for 10th run.

Metallic glasses (MGs) have attracted great attention in wastewater treatment because of their high reactivity arising from amorphous structure, large residual stress and high density of low coordination sites. However, the reactivity of MGs would gradually slow down with time due to the passivation of active sites by corrosion products, resulting in limited long-term reactivity, which is also an unsolved key issue for established crystalline zero valent iron (ZVI) technology. Here, such problems are successfully overcome by introducing nanoscale chemical inhomogeneities in Fe-based MG (Fe-MGI), which apparently contributes to local galvanic cell effect and accelerates electron transfer during degradation process. More importantly, the selective depletion of Fe 0 causes local volume shrinkage and crack formation, leading to self-peeling of precipitated corrosion products and reacted regions. Thereby fresh low coordination sites could be continuously provided, counteracting the mass transport and reactivity deteriorating problem. Consequently, Fe-MGI demonstrates excellent long-term reactivity and self-refreshing properties even in neutral solution. The present results provide not only a new candidate but also a new route of designing ZVI materials for wastewater treatment.
