Fear and loathing in the pelagic: How the seascape of fear impacts the biological carbon pump

Abstract: The biological carbon pump transports photosynthetically fixed carbon from surface waters to depths. It removes carbon from the atmosphere and sequesters it in the deep ocean, playing an important role in global climate regulation. As the biological carbon pump is directly related to biological processes, it is heavily influenced by the biomass and trophic interactions between populations in the ecosystem. However, behavioral responses and adaptations to predation risk change trophic interactions, potentially … Show more

“…Concentrating bioluminescent bacteria in packed fecal pellets or in transparent bodies promotes predation by upper trophic levels (Pinti et al 2022). Alternatively, such particles may be shredded, deeming the smaller fractions as suspended or significantly lowering their sinking velocity, leading to a stronger and earlier remineralization.…”

“…Carbon sequestration is the amount of DIC that is stored in the ocean's interior following injection (considered at steady state here). Sequestration estimates are more representative than flux estimates, as a high export flux does not necessarily correlate with a high sequestration flux (Pinti et al 2022).…”
