PurposeAttentional bias toward safety (ABS) is a positive safety cognitive ability that could encourage individuals to engage in proactive safety behaviors; however, there is a lack of systematic sorting out of the driving mechanism of ABS. This study aims to identify the influencing factors and underlying mechanisms of ABS among construction workers (CWs) in China, thereby enhancing the practice of construction safety management.Design/methodology/approachAn exploratory study using the open-ended approach of grounded theory was conducted, including 25-depth interviews with CWs. Based on the interviews’ records, a scale for measuring CWs’ ABS was developed and an empirical study on 554 workers was performed. The ABS scale was validated in conjunction with an ABS modification training experiment published by the authors’ team, and the theoretical model of the driving mechanism of CWs’ ABS was obtained.FindingsThe results showed that the six driving factors of construction workers’ ABS include organizational factors, risk perception, safety awareness, safety investment, job stress and workers’ educational level. This paper also identified the critical approach to improving workers’ ABS as an effective intervention on risk perception. In addition, the ABS scale was found to be effective in measuring the ABS level.Originality/valueThis paper is of importance in reducing the unsafe behaviors of construction workers and preventing and promoting the sustainable development of construction enterprises.

The construction industry is replete with significant safety risks, underscoring the necessity to comprehend the factors that shape workers’ safety behaviors for efficacious accident prevention. This study aims to investigate the impact of managers’ safety perception (MSP) on construction workers’ safety behaviors (WSBs), while also exploring the mediating roles of workers’ safety awareness (WSA) and workers’ safety competency (WSC). Utilizing a structural equation model (SEM), data were collected from 248 construction workers through a validated questionnaire. The findings indicate that MSP has a direct influence on WSBs (mean effect size = 0.065, p < 0.01) and an indirect effect on WSBs through enhanced WSA (effect size = 0.386, p < 0.01) and WSC (effect size = 0.392, p < 0.01). This research makes a contribution to the existing literature in several ways. First, it introduces a new measurement scale for MSP. Second, it highlights the direct and indirect effects on WSBs. Third, it emphasizes the importance of fostering safety awareness and competency among workers. In addition, the study offers practical implications for construction managers seeking to improve safety outcomes on-site.
Interdisciplinary research plays a crucial role in addressing the intricate scientific and social challenges confronting society. The field of built environment, as an interdisciplinary discipline, has benefitted from cross-pollination with various fields such as architecture, environment, medicine, and psychology, leading to a range of interdisciplinary advancements. Nevertheless, there remains a gap in the systematic documentation of interdisciplinary outcomes within this field. This paper utilized the cosine index and the Rao–Stirling index to assess the level of interdisciplinarity within the built environment field. This was followed by the screening of literature achievements with a high interdisciplinary nature, the identification of interdisciplinary topics based on the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) model, and the analysis of the evolution path of interdisciplinary topics based on time series. The results demonstrate that the field of built environment exhibits a high degree of interdisciplinary integration, with the most prevalent crossovers observed with medicine, psychology, and public health science, and fewer crossovers with electrochemistry, crystallography, and nanotechnology, which represent potential emerging directions. Over the past three decades, 17 core interdisciplinary topics have emerged in the field, and the overall evolutionary trend over time has been one of divergence, followed by contraction and then divergence. This study provides scholars with up-to-date knowledge from an interdisciplinary perspective, and facilitates the development of interdisciplinary research and cooperation in this field.
