Fear of Loneliness: Development and Validation of a Brief Scale

Abstract: This research aims to develop and validate a Spanish version of The Brief Scale of Fear of Loneliness (BSFL). Participants were 1385 youth and adults, 347 from a pilot sample and 1032 from the final version, whose ages were in the range of 18 to 40 years. Two instruments, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale, in their Peruvian versions, were used to support the relationship with other variables. Results show that the BSFL should be interpreted as a one-dimensional measure, … Show more

“…Regarding internal consistency ( Table 3 ), all components show good to excellent internal values [ 73 , 75 ]: the first component, composed by five items, yields a Cronbach’s alpha of .86; the second component, with four items, .73; the third component, .72 (three items). Additionally, there is no case in which the internal consistency would improve as a consequence of an item being removed.…”

“…After a theoretically and empirically sound factorial solution was achieved, internal consistency of the factors was examined through Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega. Following Nunnally’s [ 73 ] authoritative source, alpha was considered acceptable above .7, but scores above .8 were desirable. Regarding McDonald’s omega coefficient, values above 0.7 are considered recommendable [ 74 ].…”

“…Social distancing and reduction of physical contact have generated high levels of loneliness during the pandemic in different age groups (Wickens et al, 2021). Loneliness can be defined as a feeling of isolation, lack of sense of belonging and absence of satisfaction with interpersonal relationships (Ventura et al, 2020). Loneliness particularly affects adolescents, who due to their developmental characteristics, want to be accepted and feel that they belong into their peer group (Foulkes & Blakemore, 2018).…”

“…These approaches can offer very precise descriptions of the numbers of people who live alone or experience feelings of loneliness. A number of studies are based on surveys of very large cohorts and population samples, whilst others have focused on the review and adaptation of the measurement instruments used (Sancho et al, 2020; Ventura-León et al, 2020). However, this kind of approach fails to grasp the nature of the experience of loneliness in its entirety—since this is grounded on social, political, emotional, and cultural underpinnings that can prove elusive and difficult to quantify (Agren, 2017; Elias, 2009; Nzabona et al, 2016).…”
