“…This study revealed consistent themes of social isolation, fear, and emotional distress across both native and host communities. This pervasive sense of isolation, compounded by feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion, resonates with the ndings of Preston et al [13] and Shah et al [14], who noted similar patterns of isolation and mental health impacts in different contexts. Notably, these elements often result in social withdrawal and reduced participation in social activities, echoing the ndings of Wilkialis et al [15] on the cyclical nature of anxiety and social isolation.…”

“…It is a pity that we did not find any evidence indicating that the left cerebellum Crus I/II has concern with MDD + S. However, we found two studies that had demonstrated that the GMVs of the cerebellum was significantly reduced in MDD patients with suicide attempts compared to MDD patients without suicide attempts ( Hwang et al, 2010 , Lee et al, 2016 ). Most of the people who has suicide attempts have SI, so the two studies can indirectly reflect the changes in the brain region of MDD + S, indicating that changes in the GMVs of cerebellum may be related to MDD + S. Abnormalities in cerebellar function and structure are associated with depression ( Lai and Wu, 2016 , Smith et al, 2002 ) and negative emotions ( Lupo et al, 2015 ) such as anger ( Park et al, 2010 ) and fear ( Baumann and Mattingley, 2012 ) which may be associated with SI ( Preston et al, 2021 , Wilks et al, 2019 ). Therefore, we speculate that the decrease in the GMVs in the left cerebellum Crus I/II in MDD + S patients may be related to SI by influencing the ability to deal with negative emotions such as anger and fear.…”

“…The presence of either the thwarted sense of belongingness or burdensomeness can induce passive suicidal ideation; whereas, in the case of the presence of both factors, active suicidal ideation can be reinforced and may even lead to suicidal behavior (Song and Bae, 2020 ). The need for acceptance and recognition by their peers, perceived turmoil in interpersonal relationships, and fear of negative evaluations are often found to be valid predictors of suicidal ideation (Preston et al, 2022 ). Due to such fears and concerns, students often start to neglect social interaction, resulting in restricted social and psychological functioning, and even suicidal thoughts (Preston et al, 2022 ).…”

Due to such fears and concerns, students often start to neglect social interaction, resulting in restricted social and psychological functioning, and even suicidal thoughts (Preston et al, 2022 ). Previous studies put much emphasis on the suicidal ideation of university students (Bernanke et al, 2017 ; Akram et al, 2020 ; Tasnim et al, 2020 ; Pillay, 2021 ) uncovering psychological problems (Cvetkovski et al, 2017 ) and especially explored possible factors associated with the risk of suicide, including depression (contributing 47% to 74% of risk), substance abuse, eating disorders, and schizophrenia (Yin et al, 2020 ; Correll et al, 2022 ; Favril et al, 2022 ).…”
