Introduction Hypnosis is a therapeutic strategy for pain control. We aimed at investigating the use of this technique in a large population undergoing atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation. Methods 70 consecutive AF patients referred for transcatheter ablation, underwent hypnotic communication for periprocedural analgesia (Group A), were compared with 70 patients undergoing conventional analgesia (Group B). Procedural data, anxiety, perceived pain, perceived procedural duration and the dosages of administered analgesic drugs were compared using validated score scales. Results Hypnotic communication (Group A) resulted in a significant procedural-related anxiety reduction (Pre procedural 4.7 ± 2.9 Vs Intra Procedural 0.8 ± 1.2, P < 0.001) and perceived procedural duration (Real length 108 ± 33 min Vs Perceived Length 77 ± 39 min, P < 0.001). Group A patients reported a painless procedure in 78% (Pain scale ≤2). Regarding analgesic drug, Group A used only Fentanyl and Paracetamol. The Fentanyl dosage was similar in Group A and B (mean 0.142 Vs 0.146 mg, P = 0.65) while higher Paracetamol dosage was reported in Group A (mean 853 Vs 337 mg, P < 0.001). Group B also used Midazolam (mean 1.8 mg), Propofol (mean 43.8 mg) and narcosis was required in 2 patients. Total radiofrequency (RF) delivered time did not differ between the two groups (mean 28.9 Vs 27.6 min, P = 0.623) as well as mean RF power (mean 35.3 Vs 35.5 W, P = 0.424). No complications occurred. Conclusion Hypnotic communication during AF ablation was related to a significant reduction of intra-procedural anxiety, perceived pain, procedural analgesic drugs dosage and perceived procedural duration without affecting total RF delivered time and procedural safety.

The purpose of this literature review is to find out whether hypnosis can be used to reduce pain in patients receiving dental and oral care. Hypnosis has been used to treat acute and chronic pain, anxiety, and other positive benefits before, during and after surgery. However, in the field, the use of hypnosis is still little used and even many who doubt its effectiveness. We reviewed articles in English using keywords: hypnosis, pain, anesthesia, dental, procedure with a time span from 1846 to 2019, with 20 selected articles on google scholars, pubmed, science direct, and the national library portal of the republic of Indonesia (PNRI). , Mesmerism hypnosis and Ericsonian hypnosis have been used for anesthesia for a long time before chemical anesthesia was discovered, the use of chemical anesthesia makes hypnosis no longer used as the main anesthetic in surgery, but in certain cases such as patients with multiple chemical sensitivity or patients with contraindications for general anesthesia, hypnosis still used as the primary anesthetic in surgery, currently hypnosis is widely used in perioperative surgery. The use of hypnosis with chemical anesthetics can increase the benefits and there are no reported side effects. Conclusion: hypnosis can be used as primary anesthesia, especially in certain cases, it needs well-designed research such as randomized control trials on the use of hypnosis with chemical anesthetics, both perioperatively and intraoperatively to obtain clearer and consistent scientific information about hypnosis and chemical anesthetics.

Purpose To assess the impact on children of self-hypnotic relaxation scripts read by trained staff prior to the induction of anesthesia and/or extubation on the periprocedural experience. Patients and Methods A total of 160 children aged 7–18 years undergoing a cardiac catheterization intervention under general anesthesia were randomized into 4 groups: (1) a pre-procedure (PP-script) read prior to entering the procedural room, (2) a script read prior to extubation (PX-Script), (3) both PP- and PX-Scripts read and (4) no script read. Anxiety and pain were rated on self-reported 0–10 scales. The modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale was used for preoperative anxiety. The effect of script reading was associated with outcomes by linear regression for continuous variables, and logistic regression for binary variables in two-sided tests at a significance level of 0.05. Results are given in odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results Data were available for 158 patients. Reading the PP-Script prior to anesthesia was associated with a significant reduction in the use of intraoperative sedatives from 30% to 14% (OR 0.40; CI 0.18–0.88; p = 0.02) by the anesthesiologists, who were blinded to group attribution until extubation. This was despite the children not self-reporting significantly lower levels of anxiety or pain. The PX-Script did not change outcomes. Among groups, there was no significant difference in room time, postoperative recovery time and pain. Conclusion Reading a PP-Script for guidance in self-hypnotic relaxation can result in less need for intravenous sedation in the judgment of the anesthesiologist, independent of the children’s self-reported anxiety and pain.
